Located at the south end of Lake Union, the Naval Reserve Armory is a massive concrete structure built during World War II. The building sits on wood piles on a pier structure that extends over the lake.

Many unique existing features are incorporated into the design for the new home for MOHAI. The roof trusses over the atrium will be exposed and strengthening the trusses will support a new grand staircase and elevator and allow large exhibits, including a hydroplane, to be hung from them.
